The Kingdom of Fife - Did You Know?

The Kingdom of Fife has a fascinating history and culture. Whilst not as famous as The Highlands or the Scottish Islands, it does have some interesting facts all of it's own.

Seventy German ships were escorted into the sheltered estuary by hundred's of Allied ships and aircraft.
  • The Ancient Kingdom of Fife was once called 'Fib' and was one of the seven Ancient Pick Kingdoms of Scotland which came into power when the Romans left.
  • Home to on one of Britain's oldest tennis courts, Falkland Palace and Gardens was built in 1539 for James V.
  • The American singer, Johnny Cash, also had special ties to Fife. He has Scottish roots from this area, even though his relatives sailed across the Atlantic in the 1700's.
  • The famous opening scene in the movie, 'Chariots of Fire' was filmed on St Andrew's West Sands Beach.
  • Not only did the Anstruther Harbour Fish Bar win the UK's Best Fish & Chips Award, but it is also home to the Scottish Fishing Museum.
