If you are off to sunnier destinations for a walking holiday or you are looking to kit yourself out with walking kit on a tight budget, Karrimor is a good brand to check out. I have been testing some of their walking products and have been impressed by the quality for the priced.
Walking outfit for little more than £200
Karrimor Elite Alpiniste Jacket eVent There’s a jacket for men and women and both offer good waterproofing and breathability features thanks to the eVent fabric. The three-layered eVent fabric is also treated with DWR. This jacket RRPs at £199 but now sells for £85 (men) and £60 (women). This is not Gore-Tex (which I usually swear by for the worst winter conditions) but for summer walking and for a jacket that you can keep in your rucksack for sudden storms on an overseas walking holiday it’s difficult to beat. The Karrimor eVent jacket keeps out the rain and works well to allow sweat to evaporate. A fold-away hood that also has a wired peak, YKK AquaGuard water-resistant zips and an internal storm flap with rain gutter add to the waterproof protection. There are two chest pockets that when opened allow for extra venting. These are well located so that you can still open them even if you have a rucksack waistband secured. A useful zipped pocket is positioned on the sleeve. With up to 40 litres of storage it is the perfect size for a day’s hike in spring or summer. The Karrimor Fformat back system is really good. This is not a female specific rucksack but I found it fitted me well. The back stays in place and doesn’t rub. The pack remains stable and balanced even when packed quite full. The raised pads also prevent overheating of the back. The main compartment of the Karrimor X Lite is spacious and there are two pockets in the lid hood of the rucksack. Two elasticated meshed bottle pockets are located at the side and the pack has wand pockets. (Wand pockets are positioned on the sides at the base of the rucksack and allow long items, such as walking poles, to be attached to your pack). All the features you would expect are there, including an easily adjusted waist belt (that can also be removed), a chest strap that works okay for women, twin ice axe carrying system and compatibility for carrying a hydration system. They feel more like a pair of trainers than walking boots, which is always a good sign for summer walking. There’s lots of cushioning and support and the boots boast an eVent waterproof and breathable lining. (Note this is not made of Gore-Tex but sufficient for most summer walking conditions.) The Karrimor KSB Pioneer ladies boots and Karrimor KSB Pioneer men’s walking boots RRP at £179.99 and sell for £89.99 at Sports Direct.
