The Pennine Way was the first – and remains the most talked-about – of the UK’s National Trails. This legendary self-guided England walking holiday begins in the dramatic Peak District and marches north through the rolling hills of the Yorkshire Dales, across rugged Northumberland moorland and over the Cheviot Hills to the Scottish border. Often called the “spine of England,” it’s a trail with backbone and attitude, taking the path less travelled straight through England’s wild heart.

With a total ascent higher than Everest, the full Pennine Way is no casual stroll to the Pub! It’s a proper walking holiday – challenging, rewarding, and deeply satisfying, the kind of adventure that makes that second pudding feel completely justified. Expect endless stretches of remote, brooding moorland in the heart of Emily Brontë country — where the wind shapes the hills, whips across the skies and makes styling your hair in the morning completely redundant. Top tip: don't pack a hairbrush.

For over 10 years, Macs Adventure has been crafting unforgettable Pennine Way self-guided walking holidays. With the full trail available on the Macs Adventure app, you can focus on the walking while we handle the rest.  Whether you tackle the full route or choose the North, South, or Central sections, there’s a walking holiday to suit your fitness, timeframe, and appetite for adventure.

  • Wuthering Heights and the Pennine Way

Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights is famously inspired by the wild Pennine moors, the same dramatic landscapes walkers enjoy on the Pennine Way. These windswept hills and isolated farms set the scene for the novel’s intense Gothic romance, and they continue to captivate audiences in the new Hollywood adaptation, bringing the story’s stormy passion and haunting atmosphere vividly to the screen.

  • Most Frequently Asked Questions on the Pennine Way

Q: How far in advance do I need to book?

A: We suggest you book as soon as your plans are finalised, as some of the villages on the Pennine Way have quite limited accommodation options. If booking at short notic,e we will always try our best to accommodate your plans.

Q: When is the best time of year to walk the Pennine Way?

A: Traditionally, April/May has always been the most popular time of year because the theory goes that the weather is better. That said, any time between late April and September offers a great experience! If you are doing the full Pennine Way, you are sure to experience rain at some point, though, so make sure you pack your waterproofs!

Q: What is the walk like?

A: The Pennine Way isn't a technically challenging walk - just a long one! The terrain varies from grassy tracks and pastures to open boggy sections, to more challenging rocky sections with steeper ascents. A lot of work has been done in recent years to lay down stones over the worst boggy sections, but some still exist, so this is a walk where a pair of gaiters will definitely come in handy!

Q: Do I need to be able to navigate?

A: Most of the trail is well signposted with the wooden signposts and acorn symbol. On the Macs Adventure App you can follow the full trail offline on your phone.
