Hardly any other section of the route connects the city and the sea as harmoniously as the stretch between Porto and Matosinhos. Starting at the venerable cathedral, the route winds through the narrow streets of the old town and down to the Douro, which gently accompanies pilgrims on their way to the sea. In Foz do Douro, the scents of salt and coffee mingle in the air, while gardens and cafés beckon visitors to linger. Wide sandy beaches, lighthouses and the fresh sea breeze line the promenade. Finally, you reach Matosinhos, where the sea is ever-present and the scent of grilled fish brings the day to a close.

From the very first moment, the Atlantic Ocean is ever-present on this section of the Portuguese Way of St. James, from Matosinhos to Labruge. As you walk along promenades, wooden walkways and small coastal paths, the sound of the waves and the salty scent of the sea stimulate your senses. Beaches such as Leça da Palmeira, Boa Nova and Agudela invite you to stop and take in the views. The Boa Nova lighthouse overlooks small fishing villages adorned with colourful boats and cosy cafés. The landscape alternates between rocky bays, dunes and endless sandy beaches, and the view of the sparkling sea is always expansive. The stage ends in Labruge at a wide beach, which is ideal for dipping your feet in the water and bringing the journey to a close.

Shortly after setting off from Labruge, the sound of the Atlantic Ocean becomes audible – a constant backdrop that characterises this coastal section of the Portuguese Way of St. James. The route winds along wooden walkways and sandy paths, passing small chapels, old fishermen's houses, and beaches such as São Paio, Vila Chã, and Mindelo, where the sea laps gently at the shore. Time and again, expansive vistas unfold before you, revealing dunes, rocks and the endless blue of the ocean. In Vila do Conde, historic buildings and a replica of an old explorer's ship offer the chance to take a trip back in time. Finally, the trail leads to the bustling port town of Póvoa de Varzim, where the promenade, cafés and sea air provide the perfect conclusion to a varied day of hiking.

Your hike initially takes you along wide, sandy beaches, with the sound of the Atlantic always in the background. In the Litoral Norte Nature Park, the landscape becomes more varied, with dunes, pine forests and salt marshes alternating throughout. Small beach cafés and picnic areas invite you to take a relaxing break and enjoy the sea view. As you walk, you will see small fishing boats moored along the coast, and you can enjoy the peace and quiet away from the hustle and bustle. At the end of the day, you will reach the charming fishing village of Fão, which entices visitors to linger with its maritime atmosphere and regional cuisine.

Today, you can choose between two routes: the official Camino or the Senda Litoral, which runs even closer to the coast. 

Senda Litoral: 18km/11mi (Ascent: 72m/236ft | Descent: 69m/226ft)

Official Camino: 17km/11mi (Ascent: 37m/121ft | Descent: 54m/177ft)

Starting in Fão, the route crosses the bridge over the Cávado River to Esposende, where the sea meets the river and fishing boats bob in the harbour. Along the promenade, the route passes the small lighthouse and the old fort before reaching the wide, sandy beaches that stretch north of the town. The route then follows the Atlantic coast, passing through dune landscapes and over wooden walkways, and offering views of wind-sculpted pine trees. Beyond the beaches of Belinho and São Bartolomeu do Mar, the landscape becomes quieter and more rural, characterised by small villages, fields, and orchards. Finally, the trail gently winds along quiet country roads into the hinterland, leading to Antas — a peaceful place nestled between the sea and the hills.

Ascent: 60m (197ft) / Descent: 35m (115ft)

From Antas, the trail runs directly along the coast, passing wide beaches such as Praia de Castelo do Neiva. The inviting sand and surf are perfect for a short break. In charming villages such as Amorosa, you can gain insights into rural life in northern Portugal. The Camino sometimes runs along the coast and sometimes slightly inland, passing pine trees, gardens and quiet streets until you reach the Lima River. The Ponte Eiffel, a filigree iron bridge, marks the transition into the urban area of Viana do Castelo. Finally, the view opens up to reveal the city and its historic centre, dominated by the imposing cathedral towering over the river.

Ascent: 58m (190ft) / Descent: 61m (200ft)

Today, your hike will take you through the tranquil interior, always alongside the coast. En route, you will pass through picturesque villages showcasing traditional rural architecture, including the historic Quinta da Boa Viagem. You are invited to take a deep breath during a short break in the small chapel with its peaceful atrium. Impressive dune landscapes open up again and again as you take in the view of the nearby coast. At the end of the day, you will arrive in the vibrant town of Vila Praia de Âncora, which boasts a stunning sandy beach.

Today, you can choose between two routes: the official Camino or the Senda Litoral, which runs even closer to the coast.

Senda Litoral: 21km/13mi (Ascent: 57m/187ft | Descent: 44m/144ft)

The route begins at the picturesque Capela de Nossa Senhora da Bonança and follows the coastline. Passing beaches, small bays and the bustling harbour of Vila Praia de Âncora, it winds its way through charming coastal villages such as Moledo do Minho. From Caminha, the route passes the historic city walls and clock tower and leads directly to the banks of the River Miño. There, you can take a short boat transfer to A Guarda in Spain. The trail then continues along quiet paths through forests and past small beaches, offering frequent views of the river mouth and the Atlantic Ocean. The trail then winds through the charming harbour town of A Guarda, passing historic churches and the old clock tower. Finally, over rocky coastal paths and steep cliffs, you can explore the dramatic coastal landscape. There are plenty of wonderful photo opportunities along the way, for example of beaches, salt flats and the sea, before the trail ends at the impressive Santa María de Oia monastery.

As you approach Vigo, cliffs and viewpoints offer impressive panoramic vistas of the Ría, and then the city itself comes into view, with its bustling old streets and harbour. This combination of nature, the sea and an urban atmosphere makes this a particularly varied and atmospheric transition.

After breakfast, you set off on a hike through the charming fishing district of Vigo. Soon, you will leave the city behind and follow a picturesque path alongside the wide bay. Time and again, you will enjoy marvellous views of the sea and the offshore islands. Today, your destination is Redondela, where the coastal path joins the main route of the Portuguese Way of St James.

Ascent: 176m (577ft)/Descent: 207m (679ft)

First, the trail winds its way through the narrow streets of Redondela, which are lined with old stone houses and galleries. There is also a small pilgrim hostel en route. Soon afterwards, the trail crosses a railway bridge and continues along shady paths lined with eucalyptus trees and fields, providing a peaceful setting and fresh air. In Cesantes, there are small cafés where you can take a break before the path gently climbs uphill, opening up views of the surrounding countryside. Shortly before Arcade, you will begin to descend into the quiet town, which is renowned for its riverbanks and oysters. Finally, at the end of the route, the Roman bridge of San Paio provides the perfect spot to enjoy a quiet moment by the water.

After crossing the old Roman bridge at Pontesampaio, the route initially winds its way through narrow streets, climbing gently between granite houses and hórreos (granaries). Soon, the landscape opens up to reveal forest paths, green meadows and small villages with views of Vigo Bay. Old stone walls, babbling brooks and eucalyptus forests line the path at regular intervals. As you approach Pontevedra, the surroundings become increasingly urban until you finally enter the lively old town, with its historic squares and the baroque Church of the Virgin Peregrina – providing an atmospheric end to this varied day.

Ascent: 170m (558ft) / Descent: 143m (469ft)

Starting in the lively old town of Pontevedra, with its historic squares and the charming Church of the Virgen Peregrina, the route gradually leads out into the countryside. After crossing the Ponte do Burgo bridge over the River Lérez, the cityscape gives way to rolling hills and small villages. After passing the church of Santa María de Alba and the chapel of San Caetano, you will find yourself immersed in a peaceful forest landscape filled with streams and birdsong. The route continues along pleasant nature trails, offering shade, water and silence, until you reach the serene San Amaro.

Ascent: 126m (413ft) / Descent: 34m (112ft)

Starting in San Amaro, where the trail begins amid green fields and small villages. Highlights include the charming chapel and the old washing place. Gentle paths and quiet country roads then lead you through this rural idyll, offering views of scattered farmhouses and small woodlands. A worthwhile detour to the Barosa River waterfalls offers a refreshing break before the Camino continues through Briallos and Tivo. Finally, you reach the historic town of Caldas de Reis, where visitors are welcomed by the Fuente Termal de las Burgas thermal spring and the Church of Santo Tomás Becket. Throughout the route, pilgrims can expect tranquillity and idyllic natural beauty, as well as small cultural discoveries, away from the hustle and bustle.

Ascent: 37m (121ft) / Descent: 137m (450ft)

After leaving the centre of Caldas de Reis, you will find a beautiful path leading to the Church of Santa María de Carracedo. The route continues through deep forests, offering you the chance to enjoy the tranquillity of Galician nature. En route, you will pass old, moss-covered mills that tell the story of the region's past. Small streams and green clearings offering picturesque resting places appear again and again. As you continue, you will approach Pontecesures, a small village on the banks of the River Ulla. There, you will cross the bridge connecting the provinces of Pontevedra and A Coruña. Take in the river views and unwind at the end of the day.

Ascent: 173m (567ft)/Descent: 188m (617ft)

From Pontecesures, the route crosses the picturesque Ulla Bridge en route to Padrón. En route, you will pass the Church of Santiago Apóstol, home to the legendary Pedrón. The route then continues through idyllic villages such as Iria Flavia and Muíños. You will pass historic fountains and wash houses, offering an insight into traditional rural life. As you repeatedly cross the railway lines and the N-550, small country lanes, shady forests and rolling hills alternate. Quiet chapels such as the Capilla de San Martiño and hidden parks invite you to linger along the way. This varied and authentic pilgrimage experience combines lively village centres, historic sites and peaceful natural areas.

Ascent: 153m (502ft) / Descent: 78m (256ft)

The final stage of the Camino de Santiago, from Parada de Francos to Santiago de Compostela, is short but deeply meaningful. As you approach the historic city, anticipation builds with each step through quiet suburbs and leafy avenues. Reaching the magnificent cathedral in Obradoiro Square is an unforgettable moment for every pilgrim. This final stage provides a powerful and emotional conclusion to your Camino journey.
