The minimum age for this tour is: 12 Years
This tour is classified as easy to moderate, with walks ranging from 2.5 to 9 km (1.5 to 5.5 miles) in length. As part of our Slower Adventure style, we’ve designed the itinerary to include shorter walks wherever possible, allowing you more time to immerse yourself in the charming towns and enjoy the journey at a relaxed pace.
While the distances are manageable, please note that the terrain can occasionally present challenges, such as cobblestones and some elevation changes. Most walking in on forest trails or meadow paths. The greatest elevation gain is approximately +570m (1900ft), with descents of up to -815m (2700ft). We’ve made every effort to minimise these climbs and descents, but the hilly nature of this beautiful Italian region means some effort is needed to reach those incredible views!
By striking a balance between rewarding walking experiences and plenty of time for rest and exploration, this trip ensures a pace that is both enjoyable and achievable for walkers of varying experience levels.
The walks include stone steps and some ups and downs, so it’s a good idea to do a bit of practice before you set off. Starting a few weeks in advance with regular strolls, perhaps on uneven terrain or gentle inclines, will help build your confidence. If you’re already a regular walker, you’ll find the routes very manageable. And even if you’re not, taking your time and walking at your own pace will ensure success—you’ll enjoy every step!
Included in this trip are hand-selected, charming accommodations. We’ve carefully chosen properties so that you can enjoy every minute of this trip.

This tour is available to book at any time from early April to October, offering a variety of seasonal highlights to suit your preferences.
The spring months of April, May, and June provide warm, gentle sunshine and ideal walking conditions. This is also when the countryside bursts into life, with vibrant flowers in bloom and lush greenery lining the trails—a truly picturesque time to explore.
The autumn months of September and October are equally delightful, featuring cooler, more comfortable weather and a stunning transformation of the landscape. The Chestnut Trail, in particular, is especially striking, with its rich palette of autumnal colours creating a magical atmosphere.
For those considering a summer visit, July and August can be enjoyable but are typically warmer, making them less ideal for walking. If you choose to travel during these months, starting your walks in the morning is essential to avoid the peak heat of the day. Be prepared to carry extra water for hydration and protect yourself with a wide-brimmed hat. On the upside, the towns are lively and full of activity at this time, and a refreshing dip in the lake is the perfect way to cool off after a walk.
No matter when you choose to go, each season brings its own charm, ensuring a memorable walking experience.
For the easiest and most convenient method of travel, we recommended flying into Milan Malpensa Airport and taking the direct bus to Stresa. Milan Malpensa has flights from most international destinations. From the airport, take the local Alibus Lago Maggiore bus Bus No 35 (or a taxi), right from the terminal to Stresa. This journey time is around 1H and needs to be prebooked at least a day prior to travel. For Train Connections from other places visit Trenitalia for times, prices and bookings.
From Lugano take the direct train S10 to Milan Malpensa airport. It takes about 1.5 hours. For Schedules and Train Connections from other places visit SBB website for times, prices and bookings.
For some parts of this itinerary, you’ll need to take local trains or buses and even ferries to get from one location to another. Transport in this region of Italy and Switzerland is generally reliable, frequent, and straightforward to use. Clear instructions, including train/bus/ferry details, are provided in your Macs Adventure App, ensuring that all transfers are seamless and stress-free.
It is a requirement of booking this tour with Macs Adventure that you have suitable travel insurance which covers you for the activity and emergency evacuation and hospital care.
