Povoa do Varzim - today this is a bustling seaside town popular with holiday-makers but there is a lot of history to this resort town too. Visit the Cividade de Terroso, one of the most complete Bronze Age settlements in Northern Portugal and the Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, an 18th century fortress.
Viana do Castelo -Â located on the mouth of the Lima River, this historical city is often said to be one of the most beautiful in northern Portugal. Take in views from Santa Luzia hill and explore the historic centre with its Romanesque cathedral and Baroque church.Â
Caminha - this pretty little town is the last Portuguese city before you cross into Spain over the river Mino, and it's a charming little place with a 17th century clock tower, the attractive Praça Conselheiro Silva Torres with its ornamental fountain and cafes, and the 16th century Igreja da Misericórdia (mercy church).
Baiona - previously a trading town, Baiona was the first port to receive the news that Colombus had made it to the West Indies and is now a charming little seaside town which is also home to the 12th century Castle of Monte Real, now the luxurious Parador de Baiona hotel.
