Why Use Water Filtration and a Reusable Water Bottle?

Having access to clean drinking water is one of the most important things when travelling. Consuming contaminated water can cause a range of illnesses, from digestive issues like diarrhoea to more serious diseases. This is why many travellers opt to drink bottled water when visiting foreign countries, avoiding the tap water entirely. And when out and about in rural areas where water’s less accessible, it’s tricky to trust the natural water sources and it isn’t always worth the risk.

Drinking exclusively from single-use plastic bottles has obvious drawbacks: it's expensive, the empties pile up in your day bag, and every one of them has to go somewhere once you're done with it. This is where Water-to-Go comes in. We've partnered with Water-to-Go because their filter bottles let you fill up from taps and fountains as you go - safe drinking water all day from one bottle you keep. Every refill is a bottle you didn't have to buy, carry or throw away.

Introducing Water-to-Go

Water-to-Go is a revolutionary water bottle with a built-in filter that allows travellers to drink safe, clean water from any non-saltwater source by removing up to 99.9999% of contaminants. This makes tap water, streams, lakes, and other freshwater sources safe for drinking. Impressive, right? With a Water to Go bottle, single-use plastic bottles can take a hike!

Benefits of a Reusable Water-to-Go Bottle

  • Water-to-Go bottles provide a convenient and portable way to filter your drinking water while travelling abroad and in nature.

  • One bottle replaces 400 single-use plastic bottles!

  • The bottle's built-in filter removes up to 99.9999% of contaminants from tap and natural water sources allowing travellers to enjoy safe, clean drinking water without having to purchase bottled water.

  • The 3-in-1 filter system removes bacteria, chemicals, heavy metals like lead and copper and microplastics down to 0.1 microns (that’s microscopically small!). The water is filtered through a combo of activated carbon, ion exchange resin, and a micro membrane, providing water that meets EPA standards for drinking.

  • The filter also improves taste by filtering out chlorine and other chemicals that can give tap water an unpleasant flavour.

  • The standard 750ml size bottle filter lasts for 200 litres worth of drinking water – or 3 months of everyday use - before needing to be replaced, which is easy to do.

  • The filter’s recyclable – just pop the casing and end caps in the plastic recycling and the grey membrane on a compost heap to biodegrade.

  • The bottle itself is lightweight, reusable and BPA-free.

  • It makes accessing drinking water more convenient. Just fill it up from your hotel sink, a public fountain or a stream.

Using Water-to-Go When Travelling

  • Activate the filter before use. We recommend doing this before you leave for your adventure.

  • Here are some easy-to-follow instruction videos on how to do both of these things.

How to Clean Your Reusable Water–to-Go Bottle

  • Handwash the bottle occasionally to help prevent mould and bacteria growth.

  • Don’t put the filter in the dishwasher or use abrasive brushes that can damage the filter membrane.

Replacing the Filter

  • The filter is designed to handle 200 litres. If you drink three bottles daily, the filter will last a good three months (just as a guideline).

  • Replacement filters can be purchased directly from the Water-to-Go website and shipped internationally.

  • Be sure to replace the filter before each trip to maximise filtration on the go. An old filter will be less effective at removing impurities.

Following these cleaning and maintenance tips will help keep your Water to Go bottle and filter performing optimally during your travels!

Why Bottled Water Adds Up

Plastic water bottles are made from petroleum and take energy to make, fill and ship. Researchers at the Pacific Institute found that producing bottled water is up to 2,000 times more energy-intensive than producing tap water (Gleick & Cooley, Environmental Research Letters, 2009), and an estimated 8 million tonnes of plastic enters the ocean every year (Jambeck et al., Science, 2015) - with drinks bottles among the most common items found on beach cleans.

On a walking or cycling holiday, this is one of the easiest problems to simply opt out of. A filter bottle like Water-to-Go lets you drink safely from taps and fountains along the route - so every day on the trail is a day you didn't buy, carry or bin a single plastic bottle. And when the path runs along the very coastlines that plastic washes up on, refilling instead of rebuying is just common sense.
